Just Food for Dogs of Los Alamitos, California is recalling some recipes of its cooked frozen dog food for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. There is a risk for dogs to get sick, and there is a human risk as well, from handling the food to touching pets. The animals can shed the bacteria and it can be on their coats and in their saliva.
These are the foods that are recalled: JustFoodForDogs Turducken with batch dates XX110118 to XX123118; Beef and Russet Potato with batch dates XX110118 to XX011419; and Fish and Sweet Potato, with batch dates XX110118 to XX011419.
These products were distributed only through 11 JFFD retail locations in Southern California, 3 Pet Food Express (PFE) locations in Southern California and 10 Northern California PFE locations. These products were made from the dates of November 1, 2017 through January 14, 2018. These represent Best By lot code dates on all three of the JustFoodForDogs’ recalled products of 11/01/18 through 01/14/19. The products being recalled were sold refrigerated or frozen and include all sizes offered – 7 ounce, 14 ounce, 18 ounce and 72 ounce.
No confirmed Listeriosis has been reported but there have been reports of short-term symptoms in some dogs (diarrhea and vomiting). No reports of human illness have been received to date.
A customer reported that the Turducken recipe made her dogs with with diarrhea and vomiting. Lab testing by the company gave preliminary results showing that the human-grade green beans used in the product were positive for the pathogenic bacteria.
If you have this dog food, do not feed it to your dog. Throw it away in a well sealed package, either double-wrapped or in a secure container so other animals can’t get at it. You can also return the products to the store where you bought them for a full refund.
It’s a good idea to clean your refrigerator or freezer, wherever you stored these products, with a mild bleach solution to kill bacteria. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, and freezing doesn’t kill it. Wash your hands well with soap and water after cleaning and after touching the product.
The symptoms of listeriosis in dogs include diarrhea, fever, lethargy, vomiting, nausea, and weakness. Human symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, muscle aches, diarrhea, and nausea. If your pet does get sick, take her to the veterinarian. If you or a member of your family gets sick, see your doctor and mention that you bought products included in this recall.
